Haiti faces escalating turmoil as criminal gangs tighten their grip on Port-au-Prince. These vicious gangs control up to 90% of the capital. Added to these imponderables, Prime Minister Ariel Henry has resigned, while he was on a visit abroad, posing political uncertainty to the tiny country.

Haiti’s political landscape has been marred by instability since the assassination of President Jovenel Moïse in 2021, with no subsequent elections held since 2016. Henry, appointed by Moïse, was slated to step down in early February, further exacerbating the leadership vacuum.

Prime Minister Ariel Henry, who has not been able to fly home since his trip to Kenya last week tendered his resignation. The development worsens Haiti’s already fragile political situation.

Despite efforts to address the crisis, including Henry’s agreement in Nairobi to deploy Kenyan police officers to Haiti, the situation remains precarious. Diplomatic discussions in Kingston sought to formalize a proposal urging Henry to transfer power to a transitional council representative of Haitian civil society, which the outgoing Prime Minister had agreed to.

Meanwhile, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced an additional US$100 million to finance the deployment of a multinational force mission to Haiti. Blinken pledged during a meeting with Caribbean leaders in Jamaica to discuss the crisis in Haiti.
