Necessities such as rice, sugar, oil, and milk, essential for Ramadan observance, have become prohibitively expensive.  People are urging for government intervention to lower prices.

As Ramadan commences, Muslims in Niger, are grappling with skyrocketing prices. It is increasingly becoming difficult for ordinary citizens to afford essential items. The embargo imposed by neighboring countries which lasted nearly eight months, is taking a toll on people.

The lifting of the embargo just weeks before Ramadan though gave a breather to the hard-pressed people, but the reality on the ground remains dire. Necessities such as rice, sugar, oil, and milk, essential for Ramadan observance, have become prohibitively expensive.  People are urging for government intervention to lower prices.

The transition government led by the military junta is struggling to supply the market with essential goods. The junta’s inability to effectively manage the economy has left many Niger citizens in disarray. Delays and inefficiencies in transporting goods are experienced throughout the country. Supply shortages contribute to price inflation as a short-term solution to such lingering problems seems to be distant.
