The government of Zimbabwe’s partnership with DP World owned by the government of Dubai is expected to give a significant boost to cooperation in infrastructure development. The areas envisaged for cooperation include refurbishment of roads, railways, tolling, airports, and inland marine business opportunities. DP World is considered the largest marine terminal operator in the world, with 50 terminals and 12 new developments across 32 countries.
A Zimbabwean delegation led by Minister of Transport and Infrastructural Development, Felix Mhona met with the CEO and managing director of DP World for the Middle East and Africa, Mr Suhail Al Banna in Dubai, the United Arab Emirates on October 27th in Dubai at the Dubai Expo. During the meeting, Minister Mhona said the Government of Zimbabwe is committed to its partnership between DP World and its parastatals and State Enterprises in the infrastructure business, especially railways and the National Handling Services (NHS). Further, he invited DP world to participate in Zimbabwe’s infrastructure development including refurbishment of roads, railways, tolling, airports and our inland marine business opportunities. He pointed out that various projects by the Zimbabwe government were underway such as roads rehabilitation and widening, particularly along the North-South corridor of Beitbridge, Harare, Chirundu, and/Victoria Falls. Expansion of the Robert Gabriel Mugabe International Airport airports was at an advanced stage while the Victoria Falls expansion project has been commissioned. He said that Government has approved the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) to partner with actors who can set up dry ports around the country. He felt that the partnership of National Handling Services (NHS), as well as NRZ with DP World, will go a long way in boosting their container and break-bulk handling capacities.
