Sudan warned by Global leaders for anti-democracy moves

Global leaders have warned Sudanese top officials for the coup  attempt, and for dissolving the elected government and for declaring the state of emergency. The first one  to condemn the anti-democratic move was US deputy representative to the UN Richard Mills. He said that the military coup in Sudan has put US assistance to the country at riskThe African Union has called the military takeover in Sudan “unconstitutional”. It has also suspended its membership within the continent-wide bloc.

The UN Security Council president Martin Kimani also condemned the development and called for immediate and unconditional releases of detainees. UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres pressed  for  immediate release of Sudan’s prime minister and all other officials, while condemning the attempted coup. After the coup. Sudanese security forces launched sweeping arrests of anti-coup protesters. It has tightened the regime’s grip over the government. At the same time, the international community called for punitive measures against those people who attempted the coup.

The coup comes after a rocky two-year transition outlined in an August 2019 power-sharing deal between military and civilians. The removal of autocrat Omar al-Bashir on the back of mass protests against his regime was  the trigger for continuing instability in the country.
