  • UN chief Antonio Guterres has urged the military juntas in Burkina Faso, Guinea and in Mali to hand power back to civilians at the earliest.

UN chief Antonio Guterres met Senegalese President Macky Sall the current chair of the ECOWAS in Dakar and discussed the jihadist insurgency in the Sahel region. Speaking after the meeting with President Sall he urged the military juntas in Burkina Faso, Guinea and in Mali to hand power back to civilians at the earliest. UN he said will continue to exert pressure on the military regimes in all the three countries for an immediate return to constitutional order. All three countries witnessed military coups: Mali in August 2020 and May 2021; Guinea in September 2021; and Burkina Faso in January 2022.

Reacting to the coup, ECOWAS suspended all three countries from its membership. Mali was put under sanctions, in January after the regime refused to restore civilian rule. ECOWAS has warned Guinea and Burkina Faso also that both the countries will also be placed under sanctions if they fail to expedite transition to civilian rule within a “reasonable” timeframe. But the military regimes in both countries as well as Mali appear to be in no mood to listen and rejected the timetable proposed by ECOWAS. While Burkina Faso military leader stuck to the three-year transition period they had already announced, Guinea’s junta leader Colonel Mamady Doumbouya announced a 39-month transition period to civilian rule. On April 21 the military junta announced the launch of a two-year transition “process” before elections are held. ECOWAS had called for elections within maximum 16 months.
