The head of Guinea’s military government, Colonel Mamady Doumbouya, addressing a television broadcast on 30th April has announced a 39 month transition period for the country. The proposal he said would be put up for the approval of Guinea’s National Transitional Council acting as parliament. Guinea’s National Transition Council (CNT) is an 80-member body set up after the coup to act as a parliament. It is tasked with fixing the country’s next election.

The army ousted the elected president Alphas Conde in September 2021.

Mr Condé had become increasingly unpopular after he changed the constitution to continue for a third term as president. Although his overthrow was initially welcomed by many Guineans, there has been growing discontent as the military junta failed to hand over power to civilian rule.

Regional bloc ECOWAS had warned the military junta that it will risk economic and financial sanctions if it did not come forward with an “acceptable” transition timetable before April 25 deadline. Junta sought more time and said it was having internal consultations for a transition period of between 18 and 52 months. The median proposal was agreed after the consultations at all levels he claimed. Col Doumbouya also promised that no member of the interim government, including himself, will be allowed to contest elections that will determine the next civilian government.
