Tanzanian Minister for Industry and Trade, Innocent Bashungwa
announced that there were 476 small scale industries in Mpanda
Municipality, which the government was giving focused attention to
create more employment and to give a critical push to the economy. A
good number of these industries are agro-based. Over 30-acres of land
has already been allocated for this purpose, which has all the
necessary infrastructures, like water, electricity, etc for setting up
agro-based industries. Of the total 476 units planned, 42 small
factories have already come up and the rest would spring up in due
course to time. These units will have two spin off effects: one
creates demand for local agricultural products and two; generates
employment directly or indirectly.
The crops that are grown in the municipality area are sunflower,
sesame, honey, groundnut and paddy. The small scale units, which are
coming up will have the capability to process these agricultural goods
to convert them into value added products. Keeping in mind the need
for multiplying such units across the municipality, the government is
taking care to promote such businesses, which make use of the local
agricultural products. The focus is on setting up small and micro
factories, which can produce quality products. The Tanzanian
government is conducting surveys to identify more such products grown
locally, which can be processed in the small and micro factories.
Experts feel that such efforts can bear fruits only when the
government supports them with technology, easy credit and marketing.
The government has already allocated Tanzanian Shilling 50 million in
2020-21 for helping entrepreneurs to acquire machines and other
equipment as also for expansion and modernization of the plants.
