Sudan’s ruling military general, Gen. Abdel-Fattah Burhan who came to power in a coup nearly a year ago, said he would not run in future elections for a civilian-led government. In an interview with a wire agency, the general reported that he was not inclined to contest in future elections either.

Sudan’s coup halted the country’s short stint with democracy after three decades of repressive rule by strongman Omar al-Bashir. Sudan has been undergoing a trajectory of turmoil when people supporting military rule are clashing with those who are supporting the civilian rule, taking a heavy toll on the country’s progress. The economic situation is worsening day -by -day with inflation expected to hit a staggering 245% this year.

However, Burhan said that once an elected government was in place, the armed forces would be another institution of that government rather than retain a higher status.
