The Sudanese Bar Association (SBA) has presented a draft transitional constitution framework document for Sudan to the drafting committee of several pro-democratic political forces for their feedback. After proposing some amendments, the same was approved as the final version last week. The move was applauded by many diplomatic missions in Sudan as well as AU-IGAD-UNITAMS Trilateral Mechanism and Democratic Unionist Party (DUP).

Nine embassies in Sudan including Embassies of France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Spain, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and the United States welcomed the development calling it as a serious and encouraging initiative, that has the potential to achieve a civilian-led government that can put Sudan on a path to democracy and elections. The statement appreciated that the document placed emphasis on having a wide base of popular support and a focus on inclusivity and also urged to ensure that no single actor, group, or coalition should have a monopoly on the political process.

Last week we reported that nine coordination teams of resistance committees in Greater Khartoum had called for close cooperation between them and other democratic forces, to reverse the October 2021 military coup and build start a democratic Sudan. The joint statement was widely welcomed by 22 professional associations, including the SBA.
