Thousands of Sudanese protesters took to the streets in Khartoum, yesterday (13th September) demanding a return to civilian rule following a military coup last year. They carried posters and placards criticizing military rule. They made it clear that they would continue with their protests till their demand for the civilian rule is met.
Sudan has been facing intense demonstrations since the armed forces led by General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan usurped to power in October last year. In July this year, Burhan promised to step aside and make way for Sudanese factions to agree on a civilian government. Civilian leaders dismissed the move and termed it as a ploy to deflect attention.

These developments are taking place when the country is facing an acute food shortage. In June, the UN said that one-third of the population of 15 million was facing “acute food insecurity”. The UN also warned that the situation would further deteriorate.
