  • The President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby has declared a state of emergency  to contain and manage the severe floods in the country. More than a million people in the country were reported to be affected.

 The President of Chad, Mahamat Idriss Deby has declared a state of emergency to contain and manage the severe floods in the country. More than a million people in the country were reported to be affected. Heavy and early rains, the heaviest in decades, are reported to be the cause of floods. Rainy season in Chad happens from May to October and flood situations are not uncommon.

The floods were reported in 18 out of 23 provinces in the country causing heavy damage to agriculture and livestock. The United Nations has estimated that 5.5 million Chadians need emergency humanitarian aid. As per the World Bank data, almost 42 percent of the 16 million population of Chad lives in poverty.
