Ahmat Barchire, Rapporteur of the National Sovereign Inclusive Dialogue (DNIS) stated that there was a broad consensus to set the transition period at a maximum of 24 months. It was also agreed that any Chadian who meets the conditions set by the law should be eligible to vote and be elected.”
The national reconciliation dialogue forum that was boycotted by most of the opposition members, two out of three key armed rebel groups and civil society organisations is expected to be resisted by political parties, civil society, and the African Union, according to political scientists. The European Union and the United States are also expected to disapprove Deby’s eligibility to run or the extended transition period and are likely to impose sanctions against Chad. Chad which is at the bottom of the global list of poor countries has been a constant victim of civil war and unrest since 1960, after gaining independence from France.
