Sir Anerood Jugnauth former PM of Mauritius is no more

·        A tall leader of Indian origin Sir Aneroid Jugnauth was decorated with Padma Vibhushan, one of the highest titles accorded to personalities from India and abroad by the Indian government.

Former Prime Minister and President of the Republic of Mauritius , Sir Anerood Jugnauth  died at the age of 91. He is the longest serving prime minister of the Island Nation with more than 18 years of tenure and is credited  as the main architect of modern Mauritius.

Jugnauth, as he was affectionately called, held the post of Prime Minister for three terms viz. between 1982 and 1995, then between 2000 and 2003, and later between 2014 and 2017. Later, he passed on the baton to his   son Pravind Jugnauth, who is the current Prime Minister of Mauritius.

A tall leader of Indian origin Sir Aneroid Jugnauth was decorated with Padma Vibhushan, one of the highest titles accorded to personalities from India and abroad by the Indian government.  Indian Prime Minister Narenda Modi in his condolence message recalled the great work he had done for creating a modern Mauritius and in building strong bilateral relations between India and Mauritius.

Sir Anerood Jugnauth was elected as Prime Minister of Mauritius in 2003 and continued to serve without any break as the head of the state till 2012. He was again appointed as the Prime Minister in 2014. Earlier, he served as a cabinet minister during the leadership of Seewoosagur  Ramgoolam from 1965 up to 1969. In 1970, he joined the newly created political party of the Mauritian Militant Movement  to eventually become its leader in 1982.

Born into a migrant Hindu Yadav family in Palma, he was the third generation from his  family lineage  to be in Mauritius. In 1850’s his grandfather migrated to the Island Country from Bihar in India.
