A group of 18 students, whose main interest lies in the fisheries sector, has been given a second chance to study at the Seychelles Maritime Academy (SMA). They will be undertaking the Sustainable Fisheries Programme for young seafarers. The 18 students of various ages are those who did not get accepted to the academy upon completion of their secondary school studies.  They will now have the opportunity to learn various aspects of fishing and life at sea, during the four-month course.

The Director of SMA, Captain Prasanna Sedrick, urged the students to seize the second chance they have been given and to give it their best. As part of the program, the students will learn numerous maritime techniques, including safety, marine mechanics, hook and line preparation, fish trap making, and navigation. This program is billed as another step in the country’s efforts to bring more young people into the fisheries sector. Youngsters in Seychelles are shying away from the fishery sector.

The program is supported by the Ministry for Fisheries and Blue Economy, the Ministry of Education, and the Ministry for Employment. Authorities are proposing to have more of such programs to fruitfully engage and train young men, who could not make it to the academy.

In another program of similar nature, students from secondary and post-secondary schools in Seychelles will be able to learn more about all the work done till  tuna cans are put on the market during their visits to the Indian Ocean Tuna (IOT) factory. The visits of the students coincided with World Tuna Day and gave students the chance to know what job opportunities are on offer at the company.

Organized in collaboration with the Seychelles Fishing Authority (SFA), the program would help students to know what goes on at the factory if they are interested in pursuing a career in fishing.
