Dakar, capital of Senegal, will now have a platform to groom talents in the film world including script writers. Many feel this may be the next breeding ground for talented African scriptwriters.
The school for script writers known as The Kourtrajmé collective and its founder, Ladj Ly, the multi-award-winning director of “Les Misérables”, opened the first free film school in Africa in Senegal. This is his third film school in less than four years after starting in France.
Eleven aspiring scriptwriters are undergoing training in creative writing in an old building that has been converted into a cultural space. The old building, which has attracted some media attention these days, is situated in the heart of Dakar.
Senegal might not be one of the biggest African countries in the film and audio-visual production industry. According to the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural organization (UNESCO), the country is in the midst of a TV serial production boom. The future Kourtrajmé graduates will play a crucial role in that boom by acquiring talents to cruise through the rigours of script writing.
