Energy and chemical company Sasol and steel producer ArcelorMittal SA have decided to partner and develop carbon capture technology to produce sustainable fuels and chemicals, and green steel production through green hydrogen and derivatives. According to a statement issued by both companies, the partnership is expected to enable both companies to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2050 apart from creating employment. The agreement also includes using green hydrogen to manufacture steel.
The companies have agreed to undertake advanced studies under a joint development agreement (JDA). The two potential projects to be covered under the JDA are the Saldanha green hydrogen and derivatives study and the Vaal carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) study. These studies will examine the region’s potential as an export hub for green hydrogen and derivatives, as well as green steel production. It will also explore the use of renewable electricity and green hydrogen to convert captured carbon from ArcelorMittal South Africa’s Vanderbijlpark’s steel plant into sustainable fuels and chemicals.
