Heavy load shedding derails life and business in South Africa

  • The year 2022 has witnessed the power cuts by Eskom crippling the life and business in South Africa. Out of the total 260 days until September 18th,2022, South Africa experienced power cuts on more than 100 days.

For the second time this year, South Africa is facing heavy load shedding. After the tripping of a generating unit each at Kusile and Kriel power stations, Eskom has announced Stage 6 load shedding. Emergency measures like energy rationing are also being considered to stave off stage 8.

In Stage 6 up to 6,000MW of the national load can be shed which means that consumers will face load shedding up to 12 times in a four-day period: six times for two hours and six times for four hours

Eskom spokesperson Sikonathi Mantshantsha in a statement announced the plan to escalate measures to deal with the power crisis. The year 2022 has witnessed the power cuts by Eskom crippling life and business in South Africa. Out of the total 260 days until September 18th,2022, South Africa experienced power cuts for more than 100 days. At the same time, Eskom is proposing 32% increase in electricity tariffs from April 2023.

Critics are of the view that the government still lacks a strategy to achieve long-term energy security. They have suggested curtailing the operations of energy guzzlers like South32 and Sasol’s Secunda to get the power crisis under control. Both are members of the intensive Users Group (EIUG). The opposition party, Democratic Alliance alleged that though Ramaphosa announced an urgent energy action plan two months ago, no progress has been reported on the plan.
