Rwanda exports dried Chilli pepper to China

  • The first consignment of dried chili pepper from Rwanda, the first African country to debut the product on the Chinese market was delivered to China.

The first consignment of dried chili pepper from Rwanda, the first African country to debut the product on the Chinese market was delivered to China. This is part of a deal secured by Diego Twahirwa, a young Rwandan entrepreneur in agribusiness and China’s GK International, located in Hunan Province. An agreement has been signed by both the parties to export 50,000 tonnes of dried chili, every year from Rwanda, for a period of five years. Hunan is a big hub in China for consumption and processing of chili peppers across the country.

This has come as a big breakthrough for Rwanda for expanding its steadily growing chili exports as China has the world’s largest number of dried chili pepper consumers. It is estimated that there is a market opportunity of exporting 119,900 tonnes of dried chili peppers in the first half of 2021.Experts say that China offers a sustainable and reliable market for Chilli farmers of Rwanda. Apart from Rwanda, only seven countries are allowed to export dried chili peppers to China.
