Respite from fighting in Sudan; people fear tension may escalate

Many residents in Khartoum and the neighboring city of Omdurman emerged from their homes to seek food and water, lining up at bakeries or grocery stores.  For days, they were trapped inside because of the fighting between the army and a rival paramilitary group. Many shops, buildings, and homes were destroyed or looted.

People queued to buy their basic needs in various cities despite gunfire and explosions. Clashes are limited to some pockets, mainly around the military’s headquarters and the Republican Palace. Many are fleeing the capital city of Khartoum, where the fighting was intense.

Food has grown more difficult to obtain.  Electricity is cut off across much of the capital and other cities. To add to the woes, many hospitals have been shut down. Relief agencies have suspended their operations. In Sudan, a third of the population of 46 million lives on humanitarian assistance. The international evacuations of foreigners are now taking place. Many fear that once that is over, the fighting between the two generals for power will escalate.
