US-Kenya Business Roadshow in New York to bring together textiles sector

The first-ever U.S.-Kenya Business Roadshow was held in New York City recently. Titled as the Prosper Africa initiative, the show was held by the  U.S. Embassy in Kenya with the support of the Kenyan government The show had brought together leading businesses, investors, and Kenyan government officials.

The roadshow aims to strengthen the economic partnership between the United States and Kenya.US Ambassador to Kenya Whitman announced six new co-investments worth US$55 million with Kenyan and American apparel companies. Kenyan President William Ruto recently announced 14 textile deals between Kenyan and US businessmen at the American Chamber of Commerce Summit (AMCHAM) held in Nairobi.

These co-investments, supported by Prosper Africa and the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), aim to connect American buyers with Kenyan manufacturers. The aim is to accelerate the economic cooperation between the two countries so as to create more jobs in Kenya and the United States.

As a part of the co-investments, MAS Intimates, the US-based company will provide training for Kenyan workers to increase the production of high-quality Kenyan-made apparel.  UAL, another US textile major will increase apparel exports to the U.S. market by building a one-stop shop in Kenya.  Mega, which will expand production capacity by adding new production lines in Kenya.  Coast Apparel will purchase machinery to increase production and export capacity, creating new jobs for women and youth; Best Lifestyle, will expand manufacturing in Kenya, hire and train new employees; and NexGen, will set up a factory in Kenya to manufacture tags and labels for branding products in apparel and footwear.
