The United States has called for concrete steps by the Zimbabwean government to restore democracy, prosecute officials responsible for human rights abuses and corruption before lifting the sanctions against the country. The US Department of State underlined the significance of confidence building measures for any productive bilateral re-engagement.
Recently, the US updated its sanctions regime on Zimbabwe. The US had placed under sanctions, 83 Zimbabwean individuals and 37 entities, including President Mnangagwa, and his top adviser. The US Department of State sanctions coordinator informed the press that the US government has asked the Zimbabwe government to take meaningful actions to strengthen the democratic processes.
The US sanctions were first imposed mostly on political and leaders and bureaucrats, during the rule of the late President Robert Mugabe, for undermining democratic processes such as curbing media freedom and the right to protest. After President Mnangagwa came to power, there have been constant attempts for the removal of sanctions. The US alleged that two of US senate Officials were intimidated by Zimbabwean state security forces during their visit to Zimbabwe in August this year.
Sanctions have denied Zimbabwe access to more than $100bn in bilateral donor support, grants, and loans from the IMF, World Bank, and the African Development Bank according to a 2021 report by the UN.
