In a recent statement issued by US President Joe Biden, he has announced that the US intends to continue its sanctions on Zimbabwe for another year. The US administration has alleged President Emmerson Mnangagwa’s regime of economic mismanagement undermining democracy as the reason for its decision.

The statement added that the actions and policies of members of the Zimbabwe government impaired Zimbabwe’s democratic processes posing a threat to the foreign policy of the United States. It stated that the national emergency declared will continue to be effective beyond March 6, 2022  in accordance with section 202(d) of the National Emergencies Act (50 U.S.C. 1622(d)).

 Biden said  that the notice shall be published in the Federal Register and transmitted to the Congress, and accused  Harare of  actions and policies that have contributed to the  breakdown of law in Zimbabwe .He observed that  the politically motivated violence and intimidation, has led to political and economic instability in the southern African region.

By-elections in Zimbabwe are to be held by March 26 to fill parliamentary and local authority seats that have become vacant since the 2018 general elections. Zimbabwe’s pre-election season has been marred by violence . US Embassy Charge D’Affairs Thomas Hastings had warned Harare that Washington was closely following the ongoing violence at the by-election campaigns.
