Mauritius woos tourists with long term visas

The economic growth of many African countries heavily depends on the Tourism sector. The Pandemic disrupted the industry severely bringing international travel to a standstill. Travel restrictions imposed by key markets such as the UK, with many African countries such as South Africa, Tunisia, Mauritius, Seychelles, Egypt and Kenya on ‘red list’ curbed the sector’s recovery across Africa. For instance, Mauritius’ annual gross domestic product took a blow of roughly 63 billion Mauritian rupees.

But the latest research from the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reveals that the African Travel & Tourism sector is set to recover.  Many of the African countries are bouncing back to normalcy and revamping their tourism sector with various incentives. Recently Mauritius has announced some very interesting incentives for tourists.

Mauritius is targeting remote workers by offering long-term visas, and premium visa for digital nomads or people who can work from anywhere in the world. Nilen Vencadasmy, Chairman, Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority, stated that people may travel less but for a longer period. This has been proved right after Mauritius opened its borders to visitors. The average revenue per tourist has gone up to 84,000 Mauritian rupees from 45,000 Mauritian rupees.
