Mali’s Interim Prime Minister claims success over Jihadists at UN General Assembly

Mali’s interim Prime Minister, Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga, praised the military junta’s successes against the jihadists and his country’s regained sense of sovereignty at the UN General Assembly in New York.

In Mali, the interim prime minister’s speech drew praise for what was described as “raw truths”, his courage and eloquence. On the streets of Bamako, people are celebrating his return to the country after the speech at the UN General Assembly, where they say, he amplified the voice of Mali. Mali’s strongman, as reported by www.trendsnafrica.com called the President of Niger not a citizen of that country.

Mali is emerging from a six-month trade and financial embargo imposed by ECOWAS.  But relations continue to be strained between ECOWAS and Mali on account of its reneging on the promise of an early return to civilian rule. Now, Mali’s military junta says that elections will be held only in 2024.

Since the 2020 coup, the military consolidated its grip on a country facing the spread of jihadism and crises of all kinds. The military has cut ties with France and its European allies and turned to Russia for help.
