Mali’s interim prime minister Abdoulaye Idrissa Maïga criticised France at the UN for its unilateral decision to withdraw the French military from his country, when the country critically needed its help, adding that Mali felt abandoned in its fight against terrorism.

Earlier in its letter dated 15 August 2022, Mali requested an emergency meeting of the United Nations Security Council to present the evidence in its possession, corroborating the French army had repeatedly attacked his country. France’s military intervention in Mali can be dated back to 2013 to oust Islamic extremists from the control of the northern Malian towns. That intervention continued till 2022 August.

The Malian president said that the Malian people had decided to take their destiny into their own hands and now support the government in rebuilding Mali and in returning to a peaceful and secure constitutional order in March 2024.

Significantly, the Malian president criticised U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres for inept handling of the situation. The praise accorded to Russia by him did not come as a surprise to the general assembly since it is widely reported that Russian fighters from the Wagner Group are present in Mali. France has accused the Russian force of carrying out human rights abuses in the country.
