Colonel-Major Ismaël Wagué the leader of Junta that seized power in Mali formally denied the reports in the media that the junta proposed a 3-year transition to ECOWAS mediators. It was reported in the media on 24th August that the military-led transitional body announced its decision to rule for three years.
At a press meet yesterday Colonel Wagué, declared that no such decision has been taken. He clarified that no statements were issued about a government with a military majority, the nature of the transition, the transition president, the formation of the government, etc. These decisions he added will be made between Malians, with political parties, socio-political groups, unions, signatory groups, civil society etc.
Mali has been facing months of protests demanding the resignation of President Keita. Public discontent was brewing for long over the brutal Islamist insurgency and collapsing economy. The coup was condemned globally but was celebrated by the opposition supporters in the country.
An ECOWAS delegation held discussions with the military leaders to help “ensure the immediate return of constitutional order”. Recent coup was Mali’s second in eight years, and has heightened concern over regional stability. Neighbouring Niger and Burkina Faso also feel threatened by the jihadist insurgency. ECOWAS, delegation in Mali since August 23, has announced a new extraordinary meeting on Wednesday August 26th.
