President Alassane Ouattara submits candidacy despite protests

Ivory Coast President Alassane Ouattara submitted his candidacy for the Independent Electoral Commission in Abidjan. His plan to run for a controversial third term for elections had triggered wide spread violence that  left at least eight people dead . Alassane Ouattara came to power after winning the elections in 2010 and re-elected in 2015. The constitution, revised in 2016, limited the number of presidential terms to two and his opponents allege that a third candidacy is unconstitutional

Alassane Ouattara  announced in March his decision to not run for the presidential elections  that are due on October 31. He also nominated his Prime Minister Amadou Gon Coulibaly as the candidate. But the latter suddenly passed away on July 8 of a heart attack

Announcing his decision he  said that democracy is about respecting the deadlines and procedures linked to the preparation of the elections and upheld his iniative to hold the presidential election of October 31, 2020
