· The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the date
for the rerun of the annulled presidential elections on 2nd July 2020
as per the orders of the country’s supreme court
· The Supreme Court’s decision to annul the elections and to go
for rerun has come in February this year on account of the
Constitutional Court overturning the outcome of the May 21, 2020
election, which had given Peter Mutharika a second term in office.
The Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) has announced the date for the
rerun of the annulled presidential elections on 2nd July 2020 as per
the orders of the country’s supreme court. Earlier elections were held
on May 2019. Aggrieved by the rigging that took place in the
elections, the opposition parties approached the top court, which
annulled the elections. In that election incumbent Peter Arthur
Mutharika was reelected.
While annulling the general elections, the court pointed out many
irregularities that marred the elections. The tally sheets, which
were used to reconcile the votes polled said to have used correction
fluids to camouflage the mischief being done by the ruling party.
The Supreme Court’s decision to annul the elections and to go for
rerun has come in February this year on account of the Constitutional
Court overturning the outcome of the May 21, 2020 election, which
had given Peter Mutharika a second term in office. It is reported that
Mutharika is appealing the court’s ruling to a higher bench. However,
the court hearing will start only from April 15. Till that time, he
has to wait. It is not immediately known what would be the strategy of
Mutharik to put on hold a rerun of the election.
