Madagascar’s first tropical storm of the 2022-23 cyclone season nicknamed as Cheneso, which runs annually from October to April, left a trail of destruction that has made landfall in the north of Antalaha Town in Sava Region, on the north-eastern coast of the island recently. After landfall, the storm headed southwest.  The average speed of winds is  90 km/h and it can gust up to 120 km/. The latest report indicates that the speed of the winds is weakening. There is the possibility of incessant rains continuing for some more days.

Madagascar’s cyclone season usually is between November–March.  As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com,  last year (2022)   a powerful cyclone lashed the country followed by five tropical weather events. As of 13 March 2022, an estimated 960,000 people have been affected by tropical cyclones and storms, and 206 deaths were reported. Those tropical cyclones were nicknamed Batsirai, Dumako,  Ana,  Emnati, and  Gombe.

The cyclone season left displaced people in need of health, water, housing, hygiene, and sanitation services and livelihood. Floods affected about 60,000 hectares of rice fields.  About 80% of people in Madagascar depend on agriculture, but their livelihoods have been disrupted because of a severe cyclone season in 2022, Crops that generate profits such as cloves, coffee, and pepper were affected by the previous year’s devastating cyclones.
