The Lower Volta Basin in Ghana is facing a massive flood situation following the release of excess water from the Akosombo and Kpong dams, which caused severe flooding. Floods are creating havoc among people with their very existence hanging in the balance. Many have lost their businesses and agricultural products to inundating floods. Over 25,000 people have become homeless.

Authorities are saying that the flooding has taken place due to the negligence of people who are supposed to look after the functioning of the dam and regulate its water flows, which will be looked into. The guilty would be booked and ameliorative solutions would be rolled out to prevent the occurrence of the human tragedy. The Akosombo and Kpong dams play a crucial role in providing hydroelectric power producing about 1,072 megawatts of Ghana’s total energy mix. Floods will add to the economic woes being faced by the West African country, which is presently undergoing a difficult time confronted with inflation and deceleration in growth, which has exacerbated the public anger.
