Ghana received a fleet of some 100 armored vehicles from the European Union. The handover of the equipment took place on an occasion when Ghana’s president Nana Akuffo Adodo discussed regional and international issues with the EU’s top diplomat in Accra recently. The present aid will help Ghana along with its neighbors Togo, Benin, and Ivory Coast, to equip itself to meet the jihadi violence, which can spill over from the Sahel region.

The delivery of militarised vehicles is officially part of the aid. This would later include aerial surveillance equipment and electronic warfare systems. Aid to Ghana is part of a broader 616 million euro package to strengthen the defense and security of the four coastal countries of the Gulf of Guinea.

Ghana so far has not yet reported any jihadist attacks inside its territory. However, Benin’s military says they have faced around 20 incursions from across the border since 2021. Togo has also suffered attacks on its northern frontier. The EU foreign policy chief  Joseph Borrell said that EU investment would also target job creation and services, especially in northern Ghana where there are concerns jihadists seek to take advantage of socio-economic dissatisfaction.
