Pilots’ association’s spokesperson in Kenya said that the Kenya Airways pilots are planning to strike work from today (Saturday) to demand better working conditions. There is a court order banning the strike notice.

Kenya Airways is owned by the Kenyan state and the Dutch company KLM. It is one of Africa’s largest airlines with many routes to Europe and Asia. The airline is currently going through a difficult trajectory and is surviving on aid provided by the Kenyan government.  The Kenya Pilots’ Association (Kalpa) said that several meetings with the airline’s management did not lead to any progress.

The pilot’s association said that no Kenya Airways flights will depart from Nairobi’s Jomo Kenyatta International Airport from Saturday 06:00 (03:00 GMT). Kenya is the economic powerhouse of eastern Africa and a major aviation hub connecting many cities within Africa and beyond.

As reported by www.trendsnafrica.com, the Kenya Airways pilots have been demanding the restoration of contributions to a provident fund and the payment of arrears of salaries during the Covid pandemic. In the meantime, Kenya Airways said that the strike by pilots would jeopardise the airline’s recovery. It also asserted that the pilots’ demands did not merit a strike and the airline is now paying full salary to all employees including pilots as also restored some of the other benefits including gradual release of their arrears.
