JICA assures increased support to Africa’s food security

  • Shinjiro Amameishi, who works in JICA’s agricultural development department, observed that JAICA could support Africa to enhance food capacities  by utilizing Japan’s strengths, which is rice production.

According to the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JAICA), it will continue to play a strategic role to improve the food security on the African continent.Shinjiro Amameishi, who works on JICA’s agricultural development department observed that JAICA could support Africa to enhance food capacities  by utilizing Japan’s strengths which is rice production.She added that  supporting rice development in Sub-Saharan Africa will be the key solution to the continent’s food insecurity.

 Japan’s three-phase program  began in 2008 with the Coalition for African Rice Development(CARD)  in order to increase rice production for the domestic market throughout the continent .It achieved its first goal of doubling rice production from 14 million tons in Sub-Saharan African by 2018, and surpassed the target with a yield of 31 million tons .CARD that started with 23 member countries on the continent today has grown to 32 countries.The Second phase of the CARD program is to create regional hubs for agricultural mechanization. In Tanzania and Senegal  JAICA and JICA-supported rice development have been boosting productivity and rice quality.

The Eighth Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD) scheduled to take place in Tunisia from 27-28 August, 2022 will be exploring more options for collaborations and cooperation between Japan and Africa.
