India emerges a key market for Kenya’s Tourism sector

  • Tourism players in Kenya are pinning their hopes on the Indian market for the continued revival of the sector.

Kenya has managed to record a 55 percent growth during the period of Jan- April 2022  compared to  the same period in 2021.The surge in the arrival of tourists to Kenya is largely from India.This was achieved through Kenya’s consistent  marketing campaigns as well as Kenya’s conformance to the Covid-19 protocols that provide confidence to travelers of their safety from infection while in Kenya. Tourism players in Kenya are pinning their hopes on the Indian market for the continued revival of the sector.

 Speaking at a welcome dinner for tourists from India at the Nairobi National Park, Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) CEO Dr Betty Radier said that she was optimistic of further growth in tourist arrivals from India by the end of the year.Through a focussed strategy to attract Indian tourists,India has gradually emerged as a key market for Kenya tourism.Dr Radier said that Kenya is expecting about 80,000 travelers from India by close of this year.Indians have a combination of interests , of business and pleasure,which Kenya offers.The large presence of the Indian community, the decision to remove PCR testing and resuming daily flights to India has been key in attracting tourists from India.

The resumption of international flights since March from India also had a positive impact. In 2019,  Air India relaunched its direct flights to Nairobi, after an eight year gap, a move that gave a big  boost to tourism between the two countries.

Currently India has emerged among the  top five markets for Kenya’s tourism .
