  • The decision was based on charges filed by the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) — against Conde and his government.

Guinea’s military government announcement last week  to prosecute ousted President Alpha Conde and 26 of his former officials for murder, rape, kidnapping and other crimes etc raised differing views. The decision was based on charges filed by the National Front for the Defense of the Constitution (FNDC) — against Conde and his government.

Political analysts have opined that while it is important that the exercise sheds light on Conde’s regime, but should not be perceived as a political tool. Given the current context in Guinea the move may lack credibility. Some Political scientists called it as a bold move by the junta but stated that they lack the political legitimacy to conduct the proceedings. Apart from the President, the other officials included in the trial are former security officers, speakers of parliament and a prime minister.

Conde became Guinea’s first democratically elected president in 2010.His term in office was plagued by allegations of corruption and authoritarian behavior. He changed the constitution to let himself run for a third term, leading to violent protests and a deadly crackdown by police. The FNDC group had led the protests. In September 2021, he claimed victory in elections for a third term and later was overthrown in a military coup.

Guinea’s coup leader also proposed a three-year transition back to civilian rule. It was reported that ECOWAS defence leaders met on May 6, 2022, to discuss security in the Sahel including Guinea.
