Bawumia, a former deputy central bank governor, is the favorite choice of the ruling party and he will be pitted against the candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress’ ex-president John Dramani Mahama

Ghana’s ruling NPP party elected the country’s Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia as their candidate for the 2024 presidential ballot. The party election was held on Saturday and the result of the primaries was announced yesterday (Sunday). The present presidential incumbent Nana Akufo-Addo’s term will be completing his two terms by the end of next year (2024).

Bawumia bagged 61.4% of the polled votes. His nearest rival, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, got 37.4% of the votes. Presently, Ghana is passing through a tumultuous trajectory of high inflation and steady erosion of the value of its currency against the Greenback. The West African country has entered into an agreement with the IMF for a loan of US$ 3 billion to tie down its present economic distress.

Bawumia, a former deputy central bank governor, is the favorite choice of the ruling party and he will be pitted against the candidate of the opposition National Democratic Congress’ ex-president John Dramani Mahama. Incidentally, he is the first Muslim candidate to lead the ethnic Akan and southern-dominated party.  He is expected to bridge some of Ghana’s regional divisions.

A major cocoa and gold producer, Ghana also has oil and gas reserves. But its debt load has expanded and like other sub-Saharan African nations, it has struggled with the economic fallout from the global pandemic and the Russia-Ukraine war. President Akufo-Addo has led the country since 2017 and will step down after serving the two terms allowed by the constitution. Opposition candidate Mahama lost to Akufo-Addo in the 2016 and 2020 elections.
