Produced by the Institute for Economics and Peace (IEP), the Global Peace Index (GPI) is the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness. This report presents the most comprehensive data-driven analysis to date on trends in peace, its economic value, and how to develop peaceful societies. The GPI has released its list of 2023 most peaceful countries in 163 independent states and territories. Iceland has been named as the most peaceful country in the world, while in Africa, Mauritius is ranked first, followed by Botswana and Sierra Leone. The Gambia ranked 7 on the list.

Some other West African countries such as Nigeria failed to make the list, while others in the region are battling with security challenges ranging from terrorism to banditry and other criminal activities. The following are the 15 most peaceful countries in Africa: Mauritius (1), Botswana (2), Sierra Leone (3), Ghana (4), Senegal (5), Madagascar (6), Namibia (7), The Gambia (8), Zambia(9), Liberia (10), Malawi (11), Tunisia (12), Equatorial Guinea (13), Angola (14), Morocco (15).

The 2023 Global Peace Index (GPI) , the world’s leading measure of global peacefulness, showed, for the ninth consecutive year, a deterioration in the level of global peacefulness, with the global economic impact of violence measured at around $17.5 trillion in 2022, or 13% of the global GDP.
