A European Union (EU) funded livestock project has contributed to higher milk production within four months in Zimbabwe, according to the latest data from the Reserve Bank of Zimbabwe (RBZ). The quarterly fresh milk production steadily increased from 17,83 million litres, in the first quarter to 22 million litres in the fourth quarter of 2021.

The project is a part of EU-funded ZAGP’s Transforming Zimbabwe’s Dairy Value Chain for the Future TransZDVC project. About seven million Euros were allocated to address the basic causes of poor performance in the Dairy Value Chain (DVC) in Zimbabwe. The project is aimed at strengthening the linkages between production, processing, and financing.

The project contributed to increasing in dairy herd size, following the ongoing heifer importation programme. In 1990, Zimbabwe produced 260 million litres.  The production reached a low of below 40 million litres in 2008. The annual demand is pegged at 130 million litres. The high cost of dairy stock has been a major hurdle for most farmers. It constitutes 76% of the overall cost. The collapse of Milk Collection Centres (MCCs) and scant knowledge about dairy farming in the country are other reasons for the low output.
