- According to official sources, Ethiopia has exported meat worth US $ 50 million during the last 6 months of the current Ethiopian fiscal year. The target is to export 28 tons of meat to the international market worth US $ 150 million during the current fiscal year.
Ethiopia is endowed with rich livestock resources. It has the largest livestock population in Africa, estimated at around 70.2 million cattle, 42.9 million sheep, 52 million goats, and 8 million camels. Despite that, Ethiopia’s meat exports are insignificant. Its meat exports at 22,000 tons are far below its potential of 200,000 tons.

 In a bid to expand its global reach, the country is gearing up to expand its meat exports from the Middle East to the Far East. According to Ethiopian Agricultural Authority, efforts are on to export meat to China and Indonesia markets. During the past three years, it has succeeded in exporting to Vietnam and Comoros. Systems are put in place to boost meat exports. Modern Laboratories have been set up, to boost production and ensure quality and standards.
