South African Medical Association (Sama) has cautioned that the country may face a State of Medical Emergency due to the severe shortage of healthcare workers. According to SAMA, more than 40% of doctors are emigrating to other countries due to the poor working conditions in the country.
SAMA attributed poor working conditions as a cause for more than 40% of doctors’ emigrating to other countries and called for urgent government intervention. According to estimates, South Africa’s, doctor-patient ratio is 1 doctor per 3,198 patients. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates a deficit of 15 million healthcare professionals in the sector. The healthcare-professional ratio has not kept pace with the rising population. There has been a considerable drop in the availability of qualified and trained nurses also.
