A coup attempt failed in Sao Tome and Principe, a small Gulf of Guinea island nation, according to its Prime Minister Patrice Trovoada. Ironically, the Island nation is considered a role model of parliamentary democracy in Africa.
Four men, including the former president of the outgoing national assembly Delfim Neves and a former military officer who had already attempted a coup in 2009, were arrested. They tried to attack the army headquarters, Trovoada said in a video message sent to a few media agencies. The head of government was keen to “reassure” the population and “the international community”, though he looked very tired in the video.

The prime minister said there was an attempted coup d’état which began around 00.40 and ended shortly after 6 am. The armed forces were attacked in the barracks. Independent sources also corroborated sounds of automatic and heavier weapons firing for at least two hours inside the army headquarters in the capital Sao Tome. Further details are awaited.
