A high-level delegation from the African Development Bank (AfDB) is in Malawi for a two-week consultative mission to the Southern African Development Community (Sadc). The agenda is to validate its strategy for Quality Health Infrastructure in Africa 2021-2030.
The objective of the strategy is to support African countries further the development of quality health infrastructure and enable citizens to receive required health services without financial hardship working towards achieving Sustainable Development Goal 3 and the Africa Agenda 2063. The development of the strategy is in response to a request by the governors of the bank at their annual meetings in August 2020. Based on its core expertise in infrastructure development, the bank was requested to define its role in addressing Africa’s health infrastructure deficits. The Pandemic Covid has highlighted the central role of the health sector and the criticality to improve the quality of life to achieve the full potential. AfDB Director for Human Capital Development, Youth and Skills Development Martha Phiri underlined the need to include the people of Africa in the process of developing the strategy. The inputs of the people and the need to check if it meets the needs of Africans are of primary importance before presenting it to the Board of Directors in December 2021, she added. Apart from SADC, the consultations are also taking place with the Economic Community of the West African States, European Citizen Action Service, Central Africa, and North Africa.
The AFDB is supporting the construction of district hospitals in Malawi under its Health Infrastructure Project in Mzuzu, Salima, Blantyre and Phalombe districts.
