Telecom subscribers have expressed dissatisfaction at the alleged proposal of the Federal Government to impose an excise duty on telecommunications services, which was announced and later suspended. The National Association of Telecoms Subscribers of Nigeria (NATCOMS), said they would be going to court in the first week of 2023 to challenge the plan.
In July this year, the Federal Government announced plans to implement a five percent excise duty on telecoms services; but had not been implemented, sensing heavy resistance from the subscribers.
President of NATCOMS, Deolu Ogunbanjo, said that there are other areas where the Federal Government could make money, outside the telecoms sector. Imposition of more duties would kill the sector, which is already overburdened with various forms of taxes, he observed.

It was reported that the Federal Government was reconsidering imposing excise duty on telecoms services again after it was suspended. The plan would compel operators to adjust the rates of calls and data upward. The government is wanting to mop up more revenues to meet its increased expenditure. Telecoms have become a milking cow because of its expanding base. It is still not clear when the government is going to impose the additional duty and the rates at which it would be imposed.
