The Ministry of the Interior of Burundi has announced that the country’s land borders with Rwanda had been reopened after a gap of five long years. Rwanda opened its borders with Burundi in March 2022. The move will be a further step in easing relations between the two countries.

Burundi closed its borders with Rwanda in 2016 over allegations by Burundi that Rwanda was harboring members of the 2015 attempted coup in Burundi. The authorities accused Rwanda was refusing to hand over the culprits.

The Burundi authorities added that Foreign Ministry authorization to travel to Rwanda from Burundi is no longer required. Security measures will be maintained at the border including deploying additional personnel. Until the systems are back in place, lingering cross-border disruptions, supply chain disruptions, and shipping delays can be expected as border officials implement the new directive. Authorities have advised to exercise caution and reconfirm the status of border crossings before traveling or processing cargo shipments through the area.
