Russia continues to supply armaments to Mali. In a recent development, the west African country received military jets and a combat helicopter from Russia. In a recently held ceremony, the country displayed  L-39 and Sukhoi-25 jets as well as Mi-24P helicopter gunships, which were an attraction to the audience.

Defence Minister Sadio Camara paid tribute to what he called Mali’s “win-win partnership with the Russian Federation.” He said that The new deliveries “strengthen the reconnaissance and attack capabilities, of the country. However, he did not elaborate on the conditions for acquiring the gunships. Previous Russian arms deliveries made public this year included helicopters and surveillance radars as well as mobile radar systems.

Mali has been facing jihadist campaigns since 2012. The militancy has now spread to destinations like Burkina Faso and Niger. Recently, Al-Qaeda terrorists attacked  Mali’s Kati military base on the outskirts of the capital city Bamako. Incidentally, the president of the transitional authorities resides in this region.
