World Population Prospects 2022, released on 10th July  Monday on World Population Day has projected that the global population

will reach 8 billion on November 15, 2022. The latest projections by the United Nations predict that  India will surpass China as the world’s most populous country in 2023.

The estimates point out that the world’s population could grow to around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050 with a major share coming from the countries of sub-Saharan Africa. They are expected to contribute more than half of the increase anticipated through 2050

mainly from eight countries, out of which five are in sub-Saharan Africa. These include the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia,  Nigeria, and the United Republic of Tanzania.

It also reported that in most countries of sub-Saharan Africa,  and in parts of Asia and Latin America, and the Caribbean, the share of the population at working age between 25 and 64 years has been rising.

This “demographic dividend” offers an opportunity for higher economic growth per capita. Inorder to reap the benefits of a favorable age distribution,UN report advocated countries to invest in the development of their human capital. Ensuring access to health care and quality education for all ages and promoting opportunities for productive employment and a decent work environment also it was pointed out were critical factors.
