Niger has largely voted in favour of authorising the deployment of foreign forces on their territory to fight jihadists. This decision was voted by the Parliament of the country-National Assembly-which approved the text with 135 majority members out of a total of 166.

Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou rejected criticisms raised by a section of legislators against allowing foreign forces entering the country to fight against divisive forces since that would compromise the sovereignty of the country.

Niger is involved in fighting against jihadist movements with links to al-Qaeda and the Islamic State groups.  It has the support of several western countries, such as France and the United States in its fight against jihadists. Prime Minister Ouhoumoudou Mahamadou said that the recent departure of French and European forces from Mali was a major factor in worsening the security situation. Niger shares an 800km border with Mali. The foreign forces of France and the United States are already stationed in Niger. The president said that it would welcome forces from other countries also.

There were heavy casualties in 2021, in Mali because of the fight against Jihadists. Over 700 schools were closed due to jihadists attacks or fear borne out of that.
