South Africa’s former health minister, Zweli Mkhize, is the main contender to run against scandal-plagued President Cyril Ramaphosa to lead the ANC. The party will meet next week to decide who will lead the country in the 2024 general election. An opinion poll conducted a few weeks ago, before the finding of the parliamentary committee that suggests that President Ramaphosa may be impeached, the incumbent president was the front runner for the ANC leadership and subsequent presidentship of the country if ANC comes to power.

The former health minister made it clear that he would be considered for the post of ANC leader to bring about a different style of leadership that would focus on implementation; adding that it was his strength. The leader to be elected as the leader of the ANC is by convention the choice of the party for the next presidential election scheduled for 2024.

The 66-year-old Zweli Mkhize is a doctor by training. His track record makes him ideally placed to respond to challenges on the ground. He highlights his role that can come to the rescue of the country in fighting corruption and in ensuring a stable government if ANC is voted into power. The former health minister stresses the need for South Africa to focus on imparting technical skills and energy security. He believes that energy security is a fundamental issue that will drive economic growth and industrialisation.

It is important to note that the ANC’s branch in the strategic Zulu province of KwaZulu-Natal, which has the largest number of delegates, has given Zweli Mkhize massive support in the run-up to the ANC conference. The conference opens on 16 December.
