The US logistics company Zipline and Nigerian delivery start-up Jumia have joined hands to launch announced the first drone delivery service in the continent. The joint venture will provide an eco-friendly and automated delivery service for Jumia’s customers across the continent.
Jumia’s distribution network and infrastructure will be used to expand services across the continent. The delivery solutions will include door-to-door package delivery and collection, with a variety of payment options. Jumia’s logistics network includes more than 1,300 drop-off and pick-up stations in 11 African countries. The partnership is expected to offer easy and reliable connect to new clients throughout the world via Jumia’s global network. The two companies believe that the cooperation will be beneficial to small and medium-sized African businesses, which represent 90% of the continent’s business landscape.
Both the joint venture partners ran a pilot programme in Ghana ton test the feasibility of the service. The Pilot project successfully delivered a range of products within a delivery range of 2,500 kilometres. After Ghana, the two companies propose to expand operations toMorocco, Ivory Coast, Kenya and Nigeria, and ultimately to other countries in the future.
