Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa addressed the nation and especially his supporters after he was declared duly elected after an election. It is to be noted that the poll has attracted criticism from both the opposition and poll observer groups. In the somewhat tight election, Mnangagwa won 52.6 percent of the ballots against 44 percent for the main challenger, Nelson Chamisa, 45. The provisional results announced by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission revealed that the sitting President is very much in the saddle for the next five years.

In his address, Mnangagwa said that there were no winners or losers, but one united people of Zimbabwe and declared that the country would remain united despite the efforts of the detractors to divide it, without naming who are the detractors.

In the meantime, observer missions from the European Union, Commonwealth, and the 16-nation Southern African Development Community (SADC) listed a number of concerns, including the banning of opposition rallies, issues with the voters’ roll, biased state media coverage and voter intimidation, which were scorched by the elected president, who in turn criticized the observers on their roles. The Southern African country went to the ballot box to elect the president and legislature in an election marred by delays that sparked opposition accusations of rigging and voter suppression. Some of the election officials were arrested.
